The U.S. Extended Continental Shelf Task Force, chaired by the State Department, plans two Arctic cruises this summer. The cruises are part of an interagency effort to collect data about the continental shelf and oceanic basins in the Arctic.

NOAA’s Fisheries Service has prohibited the use of bottom-trawl gear in 130,000 square nautical miles of the Bering Sea, an area where the gear has not been used previously, to protect the sea-bottom habitat.
